SHODAN BLACK BELT WRITTEN TEST - DETAILS
Prior to bing invited to take part in the 5 hour practical assessment, candidates for the grade shodan (1st Dan) Black Belt, must first achieve a 90% pass rate on the written test paper. This written exam will be taken a month prior to the scheduled practical assessment. Candidates failing to achieve 90% on their first attempt will be allowed a re-test 2 weeks later. Candidates failing to achieve an adequate mark on this second written test will have to wait a further 6 months before they can re-attempt the written test prior to the next scheduled Black Belt assessment.
The written test is designed to ensure that candidates for the grade of Shodan have acquired all necessary basic terminology, etiquette and understanding of the Goju Ryu Karate syllabus.
SHODAN WRITTEN TEST - ASSESSMENT COMPONENTS
The written test includes three sections which altogether should take around 90 minutes to complete. However, there is no time limit to complete the test. The test will be done under examination conditions with an instructor in attendance. Special arrangements will be made accordingly where candidates require reading/writing assistance.
Section1: Multiple Choice. Candidates will have to choose the correct answer(s) out of a possible 4 to answer each question. Will include questions on basic technique, the syllabus, etiquette and club knowledge.
Section 2: Terminology. Exercise to test candidate's understanding of relevant japanese terms used within the club.
Section 3: Free Writing Exercise. Essay style question based upon the qualities/responsibilities of being a Black Belt.
